This is by far my favorite place on earth!  So happy to be here!  New housing in a great neighborhood on a beautiful island full of friendly people.  I never want to leave!

Savannah tells us on the discussion boards of facebook.com/militarydutystations:

Cars: We are flying out of Dallas, TX. I spoke with them, and they said it takes 24-30 days. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m going to try to ship it out early, and then we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll spend some time with family, so it should be about there by the time we arrive. The military pays for the shipment of 1 car. You set that up yourself?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ they have a website- https://www.whereismypov.com/locations.asp . They have very specific instructions on there on what all to bring and do for your car shipment?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ you show up to one of their centers with your car and all the necessary paperwork, and they will ship it off

Pets: Yes, I checked on the pet quarantine regulations as soon as Hawaii was a possibility for us. In case anyone else wants to know more about it, they have a 5 day or less program now?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú you just have to make sure your pet has had 2 rabies vaccinations, at least 90 days apart, and also a FAVN blood test (at least a month after last rabies shot) showing they?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re rabies resistant at least 120 days before arrival. If you mail Hawaii your paperwork early with the money, and bring with you their health certificate from within the past 14 days (which also documents the vet applying Frontline to them), and it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s at least an hour before they close, they can qualify for direct airport release?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ otherwise they enter the 5 day or less program, which also costs more money. If you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t dot your i?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s and cross your t?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s, it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s 4 months in quarantine and over $1,000! Terrible. I started doing my dog?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s stuff months ago just in case we did get Hawaii?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ thank goodness!

Household goods:
Because it takes so long for your things to arrive, pack all your clothes and things you immediately needs in suitcases?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ check different airlines policies on their websites regarding their military travel luggage allowances?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ some of them have great policies like dependants are allowed 3 checked bags free.

It takes about a month for your household goods to get here. You are allowed to ship some things as expedited shipping (forgot what the name actually is)?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ the movers will pack those things up separatedly, and they arrive in about 2 weeks I believe. Your personal property office (PPO) always handles the paperwork and sets up your move once you contact them telling them when you need to move?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ they will tell you the necessary paperwork to fill out and what to give them. They will give you more info on the nitty gritty details of the shipment?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ only certain things can go into the expedited shipment, like bedding and clothes?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ everything else will go into the main shipment which takes a month to arrive. You cannot have any liquids (at all), batteries, or anything flammable in your shipment. Even after you are married, he will have to have a Power of Attorney for you done at the legal office on base?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú that will give you the authority to handle any business matters?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ like moving and shipping the car off! They will not let you ship the car off without a copy of the power of attorney. You also cannot talk to the personal property office to set up your move until you have a power of attorney done. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a very quick procedure?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ a general poa is a document that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s already drawn up, they just insert your names, and he signs it?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ very simple and quick.

SO, to recap: after you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re married and have your POA, you need to get in touch with the personal property office on base to get your move set up?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ and then gets your ducks in a row to get your car shipped off! He can contact the personal property office as well. You can also then get your names put on the wait list for housing if you want to go that route.

Oops, I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m so sorry, I meant to say it takes up to 3 months for your household goods to arrive!!!!! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s just 1 month for the car.

The movers only come to pack up your things at once?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ so if you can live without all your stuff for a while, then sure, send it ahead of you! They say it takes 60-90 days for everything to arrive. It took our hhg 2 months. I sent my car a month ahead and borrowed a family members in the meantime so that we would have something to drive immediately without having to rent a car. Sounds like you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve got a plan?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ once you get married here, you can get enrolled into DEERS, get your ID, get tricare changed over to Tricare Prime (if that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s what you want to do instead of Standard that you will be automatically enrolled in), and get your POA?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ you can go to the personal property office and set up your move and to housing office as well! That?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll be great?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ so much easier to talk in person than trying to reach people on the phone! The housing office also can help you look for rentals out on the island. Forest City owns and manages the base housing now. Congratulations to you! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a hard life, but it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s worth it :) . It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s beautiful here; you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll enjoy it!!!
